Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have remote telephones?

Yes, Skytel Mobility™ supports multiple geographic locations. You can put a phone anywhere you have an Internet connection, even a different country, and Skytel Office will find and register the phone.

Can I make emergency calls?

Skytel provides limited support access to emergency calling services, for an additional per-phone charge. Users of this service must make sure the physical (street) address on record for that phone is correct, including changing the address if the phone is moved to a new location.

If your Internet connection is down, you won't be able to make any outgoing calls, including emergency calls, with a Skytel Office system. We recommend you not rely on any VoIP service, including Skytel, for emergency calling. You should keep a landline for calls for emergency services.

What are my up front costs?

You pay for any telephones or telephone adaptors you need. There is a charge for having any greetings professionally recorded.

What counts as a call?

A call is:

  • talking with someone from your telephone to a phone at their office.
  • talking with someone from your telephone to a phone at their home
  • talking with someone from your telephone to their cell phone.
  • talking from your cell phone to a telephone in your office.
  • talking from your office telephone with someone on another telephone in your office.
  • keeping a caller on hold.
  • checking your voicemail from your telephone.
  • a caller listening to your company automated attendant.
  • every caller participating in a conference call.

How do my employees get trained?

Our website has a knowledge base containing step-by-step instructions for how to use  Skytel features. There is telephone support for any other questions they may have.

What kind of Internet connection do I need?

You must have a high quality, reliable Internet connection, with enough bandwidth to support the number of lines you need.

How fast should my Internet connection be?

Every line, every call, uses 156 Kbits/second of bandwidth in both directions. You need enough bandwidth to support the number of simultaneous calls you need. If you want to make ten calls at the same time, you should have a 1.5Mbit Internet connection in both directions. If you have a connection with 1.5Mbit down and 768Kbit up, you can only make five simultaneous calls, because the uplink speed is the limiting factor.

How do I find out how much bandwidth I have on my Internet connection?

There are Web sites that analyze your Internet connection, for example, www.speedtest.net

Can I keep my current number? Can I move my number to Voice Carrier?

You can almost always move your current phone number to your new Skytel Office telephone system. Check with your current provider to find out. We can help you with this, too. Rarely, you won't be able to directly move (port) your telephone number. If you can’t move your number, or if you don’t want to move your number, you can still forward calls from your old number to your new Skytel Office telephone system. Your current telephone company should be able to provide call forwarding or remote call forwarding for your existing number. If you are going to forward calls from your old number, make sure your old system can forward enough calls. If you have more than one call coming in to the old number at the same time, you want them all forwarded. This is sometimes called "multiple paths."

What do I do while my telephone numbers are being moved?

We will give you temporary telephone numbers while you are waiting for your telephone numbers to move to Skytel. While you are waiting, you can forward calls from your old telephone numbers to your temporary numbers.
